Wegovy (semaglutide) is a once-weekly weight loss injection. It's suitable for people with a BMI over 30. It’s also available for people with a BMI over 27 who have additional weight-related health concerns, like high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and raised cholesterol.
Wegovy mimics a natural hormone in the gut that helps to control your appetite and make you feel fuller.
Wegovy is suitable for people with a BMI of ≥ 30, or for people with a BMI ≥ 27 who have a weight-related health concern such as high blood pressure, prediabetes or high cholesterol.
Wegovy is also suitable for people with a BMI of ≥ 27 and established heart disease, to reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events such as a heart attack, stroke, or death from heart disease.
If you have type 2 diabetes and a BMI less than 27, we can’t prescribe you Wegovy for weight loss.
Yes, Wegovy is licensed for weight loss in the UK.
Wegovy is a licensed, prescription-only medicine, and it's safe for most eligible adults when taken under clinical supervision.
The cost of Wegovy is based on your dose strength. You can find detailed information here.
Wegovy is available online at MedExpress. To find out if you're suitable for treatment, start a quick consultation here.
When you order the Wegovy injectable pen for the first time, you’ll receive the lowest dose (0.25mg). Each pen contains 4 doses, which is enough for your first 28 days of treatment.
Each first order box of Wegovy comes with:To get started, complete the consultation for an injectable weight loss pen and select the starter pack. With each new order, you’ll receive your next pen and needles, delivered without cold packaging. Once your treatment arrives, store your treatment in the fridge and refer to storage guidance included with your parcel if you have any questions.
We need to assess your weight once you’ve been taking Wegovy for around 6 months. If you’ve lost 5% of your initial weight at that assessment, you're likely to be able to continue using it for up to 2 years with clinical guidance.
Always read the patient information leaflet before starting treatment.
In 72 weeks, people taking Wegovy injection 7.2mg in a clinical study lost an average of 20.7% of their body weight. This means that someone who weighs 100kg may lose 20.7kg on average in 72 weeks (1 year, 5 months). This is an example only. It’s not a prediction of individual results.2

Everyone responds differently, and higher doses can increase the risk of side effects. Your clinician will assess whether this dose is suitable for you.
Yes. A major clinical trial found that Wegovy reduces the risk of heart attack, stroke and death from heart disease by up to 20% in people living with obesity or who are overweight and have pre-existing heart disease, even if they don’t have diabetes.5
Wegovy can support heart health by:
People with overweight or obesity that have pre-existing heart disease.
For example, if you are living with obesity or are overweight (BMI ≥ 27), and have previously had a heart attack, a stroke or poor blood flow to the limbs, you may be eligible for treatment.
Wegovy can be injected in the back of the upper arm, thigh or abdomen on a weekly basis. It uses a very small, fine needle for a near-painless injection just below the surface of the skin. The Wegovy pen comes ready to use, with a button that delivers the right amount of medication for your treatment stage. Once you’ve had the injection, remove the needle and dispose of it in a sharps bin.
Each Wegovy pen contains 4 doses and will therefore last 4 weeks assuming that you take your medication as directed (once weekly).
No. Each pen contains 4 doses, and you will use the same pen with a different needle each week. Once you've completed all your doses, the pen should be disposed of.
You can contact our support team at hello@medexpress.co.uk.
You’ll receive a sharps bin with your first order. This is a special waste bin that’s used to store sharps material, like needles, until it can be safely disposed of.
After every use, dispose of the needle into the sharps bin. After the 4 doses, and once the needle has been removed, the pen can be disposed of in your household waste or the sharps bin. When full, your sharps bin may be collected for disposal by your local council or exchanged for a new one at a local pharmacy.
Always carry your Wegovy pen in your hand luggage. Never place it in your checked baggage, as the aircraft hold can expose it to freezing temperatures that could damage the medication. Use a travel cooler to help keep your Wegovy pen cold, especially if you’re travelling for extended periods in warm climates.
Unopened Wegovy pens should be stored in a refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C. If that’s not possible, the pen can be kept at room temperature (up to 30°C) for up to 28 days. It’s important not to use any pen that has been exposed to temperatures outside this range.
To pass through airport security smoothly, make sure you carry your prescription with your name on it, along with the original box your medication came in. Carry your passport as your primary ID, and consider having extra proof of address (such as a utility bill) on hand in case further verification is requested.
Airline policies on travelling with medication can vary, so it’s best to contact your specific airline ahead of time to check what’s required for carrying medication on board.
Wegovy is available in the following doses:
However, please note that your actual titration schedule may vary based on your individual circumstances, including how much weight you've lost and your tolerance of side effects.
To find the right Wegovy dose, you’ll begin with a low dose (0.25mg once a week) to help your body adjust comfortably. From there, your dose may increase gradually over time, but there’s no single “right” pace or target.
Some people find they’re reaching their goals and tolerating treatment well at a lower dose, while others may benefit from stepping up. What matters most is finding the dose that works best for you, balancing comfort, results, and your personal health goals.
Our Clinical team will review your progress to make sure Wegovy is delivering meaningful results for you before continuing treatment. You can learn more about each dose here.
You’ll begin on a low starting dose, taken once a week. From there, you can move up gradually or stay where you feel comfortable, and your clinician will review your choice and confirm it’s safe and sustainable for you.
Over time, some people choose to reduce their dose to maintain results or manage side effects.
If you experience symptoms such as persistent nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea with your current Wegovy dose, speak to our customer care team for advice. We may recommend delaying your next dose increase for a few more weeks to see if that helps improve your tolerance. We can also give you tips to help manage any symptoms and get maximum benefit from the medication. It’s important to not increase your Wegovy dose until your body is ready, so make sure you contact MedExpress if you have persistent side effects.
If you are concerned by your symptoms, review your patient information leaflet or seek medical attention.
If you miss a dose of Wegovy, it should be administered as soon as possible, as long as it's within 5 days after the missed dose. If more than 5 days have passed, the missed dose should be skipped, and the next dose should be taken on the regularly scheduled day. From there, you can continue the once-weekly dosing schedule.
Yes, around 6 months into treatment we'll check in with you to find out how your weight loss is going.
If you have any queries or concerns, you can contact our support team at any time.
The most common side effects of Wegovy are digestive: nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, indigestion, and vomiting. These are usually mild, and tend to settle as your body adjusts to treatment.
Rare but serious risks include pancreatitis and gallbladder problems. Signs to watch for include sudden severe stomach pain, persistent vomiting, or pain under the right rib cage that spreads to your back or shoulder. Seek medical help straight away if you notice these.
You can find detailed side effect information in your patient information leaflet, or on our blog.
Wegovy should not be used during pregnancy.
If you're planning to become pregnant, stop using Wegovy at least 2 months in advance.
If you're planning to become pregnant, it's recommended that you wait at least 2 months after your last dose of Wegovy to start trying.
No, do not use Wegovy while breastfeeding. It's not yet known whether it could affect a breast-fed baby.
If you're sexually active and able to become pregnant, you should use contraception while taking Wegovy. You can use oral contraceptive pills, non-oral methods such as the implant or IUD, or barrier methods like condoms.
However, if you experience sickness or diarrhoea as a side effect of your treatment, your oral contraceptive may not be effective at preventing pregnancy, so an additional barrier method such as condoms should be used.
