Preparing and checking your Wegovy pills
Your oral Wegovy will arrive in a box containing blister packs of 30 pills. Before starting, check that the packaging is intact and that the expiry date on the box has not passed.
Store the pills in their original packaging at room temperature, below 25°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture. There is no need to refrigerate them.
Each day, take a single pill from the blister pack.
If you notice a pill is damaged or discoloured, do not take it and contact us for advice.
How to take your Wegovy pills
Wegovy pills are taken once a day, every morning. You must follow the below guidance to make sure the medication is absorbed properly.
- Take the pill first thing when you wake up, on an empty stomach, after an 8 hour fasting period
- Swallow the pill whole with a small sip of plain water (no more than 120ml)
- Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else or taking other oral medications
- Do not split, crush or chew the pill
The amount of water you take your Wegovy pill with is important, as more than 120ml of water can reduce how much of the medicine your body absorbs, making the dose less reliable. Don’t take your Wegovy pill with any other liquid except plain water.
Waiting 30 minutes after taking your Wegovy pill gives your body time to properly absorb the medicine, helping it work as intended.
The active ingredient in Wegovy (semaglutide) is normally quite difficult for the body to absorb through the digestive system, which is why injectable Wegovy is given as an injection rather than a pill. To make an oral version possible, Wegovy pills contain an ingredient called SNAC (sodium caprylamide), which helps it pass through the stomach lining and into the bloodstream.
For SNAC to do its job properly, the conditions in your stomach need to be just right, which is why the timing rules around oral Wegovy matter more than they might with other pills. Taking your pill on an empty stomach, with no more than 120ml of plain water, and waiting 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything else, gives SNAC the environment it needs to work. Food, other liquids, or other medications taken too soon can interfere with absorption, meaning less of the medicine reaches your bloodstream, and potentially less benefit over time.
What to do if you miss a dose
If you miss a dose, skip that day and take the next pill as normal the following day. Do not take 2 pills in 1 day.
How to store your Wegovy pills
Store your medication in its original packaging at room temperature and keep it out of sight and reach of children. Avoid storing it in places exposed to excessive heat, moisture or direct sunlight, such as bathrooms or windowsills. Always follow the storage instructions provided with your medication.
Fitting the Wegovy Pill in with your daily routine
Taking your medication at the same time each day can help you remember your dose and maintain a consistent routine.
A simple approach could be to keep your medication and a small glass of water on your bedside table, so you can take your pill as soon as you wake up. Setting a daily alarm on your phone can also help you remember.
What to expect when starting Wegovy Pill
Everyone responds differently when starting oral Wegovy, and what you notice in the first few weeks can vary.
Some people notice appetite changes fairly early. You might start feeling fuller sooner at meals, experience fewer food cravings, or simply thinking about food less. For others, the shift is more gradual. Neither pattern means the treatment is or isn’t working; it often just reflects how your body adjusts to a new medication.
You won’t start taking oral Wegovy at its full dose. Like injectable GLP-1 treatments, your dose may be increased gradually over time. This gives your body time to settle into treatment and can make side effects easier to manage. In the early weeks, the focus is less on dramatic results and more on building a consistent daily routine.
You may notice some side effects as your body adjusts, and nausea is the most commonly reported. These often improve as treatment continues. It’s also normal for side effects to return temporarily when your dose is increased, even if they had settled before. You don’t need to feel unwell for the treatment to be working, and feeling well is not a sign that something is wrong.
One thing worth knowing is that your experience may not feel the same from week to week. What you’ve eaten, how well you’ve slept, your hydration levels, and stress can all influence how you feel on any given day. Weight loss also rarely happens in a straight line. Some weeks will feel more noticeable than others, and slower weeks are a normal part of the process.
Finding your right dose
There’s no single “right” dose for everyone. Your clinician will work with you to find what feels best, balancing comfort, side effects, and results. Some people stay on a lower dose for longer; others move up over time. The goal is always the same: to help you feel well, manage side effects, and see sustainable progress at a pace that suits you.

The Wegovy pill and injectable Wegovy contain the same active ingredient (semaglutide) and work in the same way to support weight loss. The main difference is how (and how often) you take them.
Injectable Wegovy is taken as an injection once a week with no food or timing restrictions, whereas oral Wegovy is taken as a daily pill on an empty stomach, with a small amount of plain water (no more than 120ml) followed by a 30-minute wait before eating or drinking anything else.
In clinical trials, average weight loss was similar between the injectable Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4mg) and oral Wegovy (semaglutide 25mg) for patients who followed the daily administration requirements consistently. However, because the pill is absorbed in a specific way in the stomach, it works best when the instructions are followed closely every day. This means the results of the pill can be more affected by missed doses or changes to the routine than with the injection.
Why might my oral Wegovy dose look different after switching from injections?
The dose of a Wegovy pill and a Wegovy injection can’t be directly compared, as they’re absorbed differently in the body. The lower number doesn’t mean you’re getting less treatment. When you’re switching from an injection to the pill, a MedExpress prescriber uses a clinical guide to match you to the most appropriate tablet dose based on your previous injection. The dose you are prescribed will be the right one for you.
If you’d like to switch back to your injection and it’s been more than four weeks since you made the switch, a prescriber will need to review your dose at that point, rather than simply returning you to your previous one. This is a safety rule to make sure your treatment stays safe and effective throughout any change.
If you have any concerns about your dose, please with our Clinical team.
