Nevolat Side Effects

If you’re thinking about starting a weight loss journey or switching GLP-1 treatments, it’s important to understand potential side effects to expect and how to manage them. In this blog, we’ll address the side effects of Nevolat, but you can learn about other weight loss treatments here.

Article Summary:

  • Nevolat is a GLP-1 weight loss medication which contains liraglutide as its active ingredient. It has been shown to help people lose an average of 8% of their body weight in 56 weeks.
  • Its most common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation and headaches. But, not everyone will experience these.
  • Unlike some other GLP-1s, Nevolat is injected daily, because its active ingredient doesn't last as long in the body.

What Is Nevolat And How Does It Work?

Nevolat is a weight loss medication which contains the active ingredient liraglutide. You might have already heard of popular liraglutide-based treatments like Saxenda or Victoza.

Like other popular weight loss treatments, liraglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. It mimics the body’s natural GLP-1 hormone, which is released when you eat. It signals to your brain that you’re full, helps reduce hunger signals, and tells your body to release insulin to control blood sugar. [1]

In a clinical trial, people taking liraglutide lost an average of 8% of their body weight in 56 weeks (1 year, 1 month), along with key lifestyle changes like a reduced-calorie diet and increased exercise. [2]

Are Nevolat and Wegovy The Same?

Both Nevolat and Wegovy are GLP-1 receptor agonists, but they use different active ingredients. Nevolat contains liraglutide, while Wegovy contains semaglutide.

They work in a similar way in the body. However, liraglutide doesn't stay in the body for very long, so Nevolat needs to be taken every day. Medications like semaglutide or tirzepatide (Mounjaro) last longer, so they only need to be taken once a week. [3]

Does Nevolat Cause Side Effects?

All medication carries a risk of side effects, though not everyone will experience them. As with any GLP-1 treatment, very common side effects of Nevolat may include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Headache

More serious (and rare) side effects may include:

  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)
  • Pancreatitis
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Kidney problems
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) [4]

It’s worth noting that liraglutide has been prescribed as a weight loss treatment for longer than most other GLP-1s, and has a well-established safety profile. [5]

How To Manage GLP-1 Side Effects

It’s normal to experience side effects when starting weight loss treatment or increasing your dose. They will usually ease as your body gets used to the medication. Eating small and frequent meals, avoiding greasy, strong-smelling or spicy foods, getting lots of fresh air and staying hydrated will also help. If you have any questions or concerns over your side effects, contact your MedExpress clinical team, or your doctor. You can also read more about managing your side effects here.
