Colofac® IBS information
Colofac contains mebeverine, an antispasmodic medicine, that relieves IBS symptoms. It relaxes muscle in your stomach and bowel to soothe cramps and spasms.
Take one tablet three times daily, ideally 20 minutes before meals. The medication will start to work after 1-2 hours.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the name given to a collection of symptoms that affect your bowel. It’s thought to affect 10–20% of the population, particularly 20–30 year olds. Symptoms include:
- Abdominal discomfort or pain, often relieved when you go to the toilet
- Irregular bowel pattern of constipation and diarrhoea
- Stomach bloating
- Passing mucus
- Urgency, straining and feeling like your bowels aren’t fully empty
You may find that eating makes your symptoms worse.
IBS has many causes. Research shows that food poisoning or gastroenteritis are common initial causes. Some IBS symptoms can overlap with other conditions, so it’s important to consult your doctor about any symptoms you’re experiencing. Always get a diagnosis from a healthcare professional before beginning any treatment.
Antispasmodic medications such as Colpermin, Alverine Citrate, peppermint oil, and Buscopan, can be effective at relieving symptoms.
You may find that IBS also responds to lifestyle changes, including:
- Increasing physical activity
- Reducing caffeine and alcohol intake
- Eating less dietary fibre
- Maintaining a healthy weight
Antispasmodic medications work by relaxing the smooth muscles in your gut. This reduces spasms, which are often the cause of the discomfort associated with IBS. They target gut muscles, providing fast relief from symptoms such as abdominal pain, cramps and bloating.
Side effects with antispasmodic medication are uncommon. In some cases, people have reported experiencing:
- Skin rashes
- Dry mouth
- Visual changes
- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
If you feel drowsy, dizzy, or experience any vision changes, you should avoid driving and operating machinery until these symptoms subside.
You shouldn’t take antispasmodic medication if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding or allergic to it.
