Cialis is a medication for the treatment of erectile dysfunction that has a quick onset of action and lasts for longer than other medications for the same condition – up to 36 hours. It also comes in a formulation to be taken every day, Cialis Daily, which is currently the only medication that offers an ongoing solution to erectile dysfunction, without the need to time doses according to when you will need it to have sex.

How does it work?

Cialis contains the active ingredient tadalafil, which is a type of drug called a Phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5) inhibitor. It works by making the muscles surrounding the blood vessels in the body relax and allowing more blood to flow through. This is particularly important for the treatment of ED because increased blood flow to the penis is an important step in the process for a man to have an erection.

This medication has a high success rate for helping men to get an erect penis needed for sexual activity, due to the way it works. There are many reasons that a man may have difficulty in getting an erection, but all of these eventually stop the normal increased blood flow to the penis in one way or another. Cialis increases the blood flow to the penis and is, therefore, successful for the vast majority of men.

When should you take it?

There are two different types of Cialis pills and each should be taken in a different way. Below is a quick guide on how to take both pills.

Cialis

The original brand of Cialis, like the majority of medications to be used for the treatment of impotence, is not designed to be used regularly but should instead be used when it is needed. This is why you need to consider when to take it so that it is working with the best results when you are planning to have sex.

Cialis has a slightly quicker onset of action than other medications for ED and is usually effective 20 minutes after taking the pill. It also lasts longer than usual and its effect can be noticed up to 36 hours after the dose. It is for this reason it has gained the reputation as the “weekend pill”.

With this in mind, it is best to take this medication at least 30 minutes before you plan to be sexually active, so that it is working with optimal effect. You can take it with or without food, but it may take slightly longer to work after a large or heavy meal.

Cialis Daily

Cialis Daily is currently the only medication available to provide an ongoing solution to erectile dysfunction, so that you do not need to time your dose for when you plan to have sex.

Instead, you should take it every day at the same time. It is a lower dose than the original brand of Cialis and, therefore, will not work straight away. After about 5 days of taking it, however, it will be in your system and you will be ready for action whenever the moment strikes.

What dose should you take?

Both Cialis and Cialis Daily come in two different doses to meet the needs of different men in the best way possible.

Cialis

The two strengths available of Cialis are 10mg and 20mg. For men taking this medication for the first time, it is best to begin with 10mg. This will help you to see how it affects your body and you can then alter the dose later, if needed.

If you find that it is working well and you aren’t experiencing side effects, continue on the standard dose. However, if it isn’t strong enough to enable you to get an erection sufficient for sexual activity, you can try increasing the dose to 20mg. If you are still unhappy with the results, see your doctor to discuss other medication options, as further dose increases are unlikely to help.

Cialis Daily

Cialis Daily is available in both 2.5mg and 5mg doses. The standard dose for men taking Cialis daily for the first time is 5mg. When taking this medication, please keep in mind that it will not be effective immediately, but will take some time to build up in your system.

If you find that you experience side effects with the 5mg dose of Cialis, you may benefit from decreasing the dose to 2.5mg. This is often successful in eliminating side effect whilst maintaining efficacy.

Are there side effects?

Some men that take Cialis may experience side effects and you should be aware of these before taking the medication so that you will be able to recognise them more easily if you are affected.

  • Headache – a common side effect that may be mild to moderate in severity.
  • Flushing – red flushing of the face and feeling of heat in upper body.
  • Stomachache – with nausea and indigestion.
  • Nasal congestion – blocked or runny nose.
  • Visual problems – blurred vision, altered colours and associated dizziness.

If you experience these side effects, take comfort in knowing there is something that you can do. Decreasing the dose of the medication is the usual course of action and in often successful in reducing side effects, whilst still working its effect as required. If you are still worried about the side effects, you can see your doctor to discuss other medication options.
